- Excessive exposure to outdoor condition such as ultraviolet radiation,
drying and trauma from wind and dust has been proposed as the cause
of this conjunctival change.
- Clinical features:
- Symptoms:
- Usually asymptomatic
- May occasionally become hyperemic and irritated or even
inflamed (pingueculitis)
- Signs:
- Elevated, yellow-white bulbar conjunctiva thickening at
the interpalpebral fissure adjacent to the limbus
- Presents most commonly on the nasal bulbar conjunctiva and
may gradually enlarge and encroach on the limbus
- Although the theory is not well substantiated, it is implicated
as the precursor of pterygia.
- Management: short-term topical corticosteroids maybe necesarry to
treat the inflammatory process.
